The Everly Bros. did it first, so the Beatles vocal sound, which is the main stay of the entire Beatles sound, is highly derivative. There are tracks the ONLY sing on. I just think the Beatles get too much credit as pioneers, where really they were taking bits of other acts and repackaging it with squeaky clean cute faces for the teeny-boppers and their parents.

That was the pop style in the 50's and thats what the Beatles did. The Beatles were more traditionally minded in their song writing, drawing from the vocal forward acts from previous decades. Take Buddy Holly music and throw Ev. Bros harmonies and a touch of Chuck Berry and you have the first 40 or so Beatles songs. Their harmonies is what got them their record deal with George Martin. He said their first songs were bad.
